Pre-Coated Fin vs Post-Fabrication Coating
Pre-coated fin vs post-fabrication coating
| Pre-coated fin | Post-fabrication coating | |
|---|---|---|
| When applied | At the mill, on aluminium coil before stamping. | After the coil is built, by dip or spray. |
| Fin faces | Covered. | Covered. |
| Cut edges and collars | Cut or formed after coating; little or no protection. | Covered. |
| Tubes, bends, brazed joints | Not coated. | Covered. |
| Added cost and time | Small premium on the fin stock; no extra process step. | A separate coating and cure step. |
Choose pre-coated fin if…
- The site is inland and mild (C2–C3)
- Hydrophilic fin is wanted for evaporator drainage
- Budget allows only a fin-stock upgrade
Choose post-fabrication coating if…
- The site is coastal or industrial (C4 and above)
- Copper tubes and joints need protection
- The project specification names a post-fabrication coating
Cost and lead time
Pre-coated fin is the cheaper route because it adds no process step at the coil factory. A post-fabrication coating adds a coating and cure step and its cost. The two can also be combined — a post-fabrication coating over pre-coated fin covers the edges, collars and tubes the fin stock leaves bare.
