Desert Heat, Sand and Salt: Gulf Region HVAC
Why Gulf sites are harder than they look
The Gulf is warm, shallow and very salty, and coastal cities sit close to it. In summer the air is humid near the coast, and coils cool below the dew point at night or during off-cycles, so the deposits on the fins turn into a wet salt film.
Fine dust makes it worse. It settles on the fins, carries salt with it, and holds moisture against the metal. Salt flats (sabkha) near the coast add more chloride to the dust.
Heat and sunlight
Surface temperatures on rooftop equipment are far above the air temperature in summer. Coatings must be fully cured and stable at those temperatures, and UV exposure on the casing and coil faces is high all year.

Recommended protection by site
| Condition | ISO 9223 | Recommended system | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coastal city, within 5 km of the Gulf | C5 | PG-S1 Polysiloxane sol-gel | Dip before shipment; clean with low-pressure water only. |
| Port, refinery or petrochemical zone | C5 | PG-C Air-dry 2K | Acid gases on top of salt. |
| Inland desert city | C3 | PG-W Waterborne 2K | Dry inland sites may be lower; salt flats nearby push them higher. |

Is the desert dry enough that coils do not corrode?
Inland, often yes. On the Gulf coast, humid nights wet the salt and dust on the fins, so corrosion is fast despite the low rainfall.
How should coated coils be cleaned in dusty sites?
With low-pressure water and a neutral cleaner. High-pressure washing and abrasive brushing damage thin films and bend fins.
