Tropical High-Humidity Environments
Time of wetness drives corrosion
Corrosion needs a water film on the metal. ISO 9223 counts the hours when relative humidity is above 80% and the temperature above 0 °C as time of wetness. In the humid tropics that can be most of the year, compared with a small fraction in dry climates.
Warm temperatures speed up the chemical reactions, and any salt or pollution in the air is dissolved into the water film instead of sitting dry on the fins.
Coastal tropical sites
Many tropical projects — resorts, ports, coastal cities — add airborne salt to the humidity. Those sites behave like coastal sites one step higher, because the salt film on the coil rarely dries out.

Recommended protection by site
| Condition | ISO 9223 | Recommended system | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inland humid city | C3 | PG-W Waterborne 2K | Thin film for coil lines; protects evaporators as well as condensers. |
| Humid coast, 0.5–5 km | C4 | PG-S1 Polysiloxane sol-gel | Salt and long wetness together. |
| Humid coast or industrial zone, near the shore | C5 | PG-S1 Polysiloxane sol-gel | PG-C where acid gases are present. |

Should indoor evaporators be coated in tropical climates?
Where the air is humid and not fully filtered, or the unit treats fresh outdoor air, yes. The evaporator is wet during most of its running hours.
Does coating stop mould on the coil?
A smooth, fully cured film holds less dirt, which helps, but regular cleaning and good drainage are what control microbial growth.
