What Documents Should a Coating Supplier Provide?
Key facts
| Document | When | Check that it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Technical data sheet (TDS) | Before order | Film range, cure, application, substrates |
| Safety data sheet (SDS) | Before order | Transport classification, handling |
| Test reports | Before order | Standard, substrate, film thickness, criterion |
| Batch QC report | With goods | Coating batch, cure record, thickness, photos |
| Warranty certificate | With goods | Period, site category, exclusions |
Before the order
The TDS tells you what the coating is designed to do; the SDS covers safety and transport. Test reports back the TDS figures — they should name the standard, the substrate, the film thickness and the failure criterion.
With the goods
The batch QC report is the record that the coating was applied as specified. It should identify the coating batch and mix, the cure temperature and time, film thickness readings with the method and location, and photos of key areas.
Warning signs
Salt spray hours with no standard named, a TDS with no cure conditions, or a batch report that is the same for every shipment.
