How to Write a Coil Coating Specification for Tenders
Key facts
| Clause | Example wording |
|---|---|
| Site category | ISO 9223 category C5 unless stated otherwise |
| Scope | Whole coil after fabrication, including collars, tubes and joints |
| Film | Dry film range per the coating TDS, method and locations stated |
| Cure | Per TDS; temperature and time recorded for each batch |
| Corrosion test | Named standard, substrate, film thickness and failure criterion |
| Heat transfer | Maximum capacity loss, with the test method |
| Records | Batch QC report, thickness record and photos with the goods |
Specify performance, not a brand
Naming one coating brand limits competition and can lock the project into a single applicator. Describe what the coating must achieve and how it will be proven. If a brand is named, add “or equal” with the performance criteria that define equal.
Be specific about coverage
“Coils shall be coated” can be met by a face spray. Require coating of the whole coil after fabrication, including fin collars, tubes, bends and brazed joints.
Tie tests to standards
Salt spray without a standard and criterion cannot be checked. Heat-transfer loss without a method cannot be compared.
What this means for your project
The spec builder produces a coating specification with these clauses from your project details, ready to paste into tender documents.
