Factory-Applied vs Field-Applied Coil Coating
Factory-applied vs field-applied
| Factory-applied | Field-applied | |
|---|---|---|
| Surface preparation | Degreasing, rinse and drying on the line. | Site cleaning; hard to remove all deposits from used coils. |
| Method | Dip, spray or flood, with oven or ambient cure. | Spray or brush, ambient cure. |
| Coverage | Full, especially when dipped. | Limited to what can be reached in place. |
| Conditions | Controlled temperature and humidity. | Weather-dependent. |
| Records | Batch QC report and film thickness record. | Depends on the contractor. |
Choose factory-applied if…
- New coils or units not yet installed
- Coastal or industrial sites where coverage matters
- Projects that need documented QC
Choose field-applied if…
- Equipment already installed
- Touch-up or repair of damaged coating
- Existing coils with some life left
Cost and lead time
Factory coating is part of the supply schedule and adds no site time. Field coating adds site labour, access and downtime, and existing coils must be cleaned thoroughly first — corrosion under a new coating continues. Field work is the right choice when the equipment is already in place.
